2024 Opus Dei Information Handbook

This Information Handbook provides journalists, media professionals, opinion leaders and the general public with updated facts and figures about the Prelature of Opus Dei and its apostolic activities in the Philippines.

The Information Handbook is published by the Communication Office of Opus Dei in the Philippines to provide a summary of the nature, history and organization of the Opus Dei Prelature, an institution of the Catholic Church.

Opus Dei was founded on October 2, 1928 by St. Josemaría Escrivá. St. John Paul II established Opus Dei as a personal prelature of the Catholic Church in 1982. The aim of Opus Dei is to contribute to the evangelizing mission of the Church, by promoting among Christians of all social classes a life fully consistent with their faith, in the middle of the ordinary circumstances of their lives and especially through their work.

The apostolic work in the Philippines began in 1964 in a house in Singalong, Manila. The expansion outside of Metro Manila started in 1972 when the Makiling Conference Center was built in Calamba, Laguna. It is the venue for spiritual retreats and seminars on Church teachings.  The first centers in Cebu opened in 1981, followed by Iloilo, Bacolod and Davao. Apostolic activities are held as well in Angeles City, Tarlac, Baguio, Lipa, Batangas, Legaspi, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, Canlubang and Mendez.

There are approximately 3,000 members of Opus Dei in the Philippines.
